what i will do are
first
$ orca & firefox
first call orca
second call e.g firefox so orca can work with e.g firefox

Yes, you can use startx to start the x server from the cli.
You could configure your x session to start some programs when it starts
up.
you can configure your linux not to start the gui by default.
How to do this exactly differs among distributions of linux.
