Re: [orca-list] Sluggishness in Orca

Try using Orca master. There are probably tons of fixes since 3.28 since we are now up to 3.32.2 pre. According to Ubuntu documentation, Ubuntu 18.04 requires a minimum of 2GB of memory, a 2.0GHZ dual-core processor, a DVD drive or USB slots that can boot uefi enabled media, and a video card that can support at least 1024x768 resolution. This isn't the minimum hardware to get best performance though. Instead, it is the minimum amount of hardware that will get Ubuntu booted and running. As the documentation mentions, the better the hardware, the better the performance. As you mentioned, Ubuntu and Orca are seriously crippled with the computer having 1GB of memory. This makes sense because the minimum is at least 2GB of memory (DDR3 or better recommended). In most cases, a 2.0GHZ dual-core processor isn't present on the computer with 1GB memory. This also may contribute to the lack of performance. The laptop with 6GB of memory probably has a 1.5GHZ or 1.7GHZ I3 or I5 dual-core processor. If so, this computer still doesn't meet recommended minimum requirements. Test these 4 problems on a higher end computer to ensure they are resolved before settling down with Ubuntu 18.04 and later on a lower end computer. For reference, the documentation is found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements. My laptop has the following hardware: 16GB DDR3 memory, I7 8550u 1.80GHZ (2.5GHZ) x 8 processor, 1TB HD, and display that supports 1920x1028 resolution.

Hello,

Even if you get a better computer that won't always help.

Another user has a system with 6 gb of RAM and there's still lag with it.

But the voice type panel lag is definitely something that didn't exist before.

Thanks,

Brandon

Sorry, I can't reproduce item #1 below. Since items 2-4 have the
slow/low end computer qualification, I can't test anything. Best
recommendation is to get a better computer at some point.

Hello,

Since I started using Orca, every version has seemed to have a lot of
lag under certain conditions.

Here are some examples:

1. As of Orca 3.29, and continuing into at least Orca 3.30.0, when you
tab into the voice type settings panel in Orca's preferences dialog on
the voice tab, there is a very noticeable lag that was not present
before, and Orca does not announce anything else until it recovers
from the lag.
2. Orca really seems to lag when reading through websites in Firefox.
When I up and down arrow, and there's a lot of links, images, entries,
anything other than just simple text for the most part, it takes Orca
some time to read, and this is especially a lot more noticeable on
lower end systems.
3. For me, in general, to get Orca to run well I have to have a super
high end system. Another system a friend of mine has is using Orca
3.28.0, and Ubuntu Mate 18.04 with 1 gb of RAM and Orca is extremely
sluggish. When they change Orca settings and press the "OK" button,
Orca says "screen reader settings reloaded", but then takes a good 5
to 7 seconds before it announces the Desktop.
4. When navigating in general, if you don't have a super high end
system, Orca seems to lag, for example, even when going through the
alt f1 menus in Ubuntu Mate.

Is it possible that these could be fixed at some point please?
This is really the only weak point I have with Orca is its overall
responsiveness.

Thank you very much for your time and I look forward to any input you may
have.

Sincerely,

Brandon Tyson
