Re: [orca-list] Could it be possible to add a desktop file to Orca

Hi Alex.

Years ago Orca had a desktop file. GNOME (under which Orca lives)
determined that Orca was not a traditional application, but rather a
built-in accessibility service. As such, we were told that Orca should
not have a desktop file, and that file was removed.

Downstreams who want to can certainly create one and ship it. Doing so
should be easy and easy to maintain. But I won't be re-adding it upstream.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hello all,

Most of the application can be started by menu but it's not possible to
find Orca inside the application menu. Also when you try to add an
application to startup you can browse the currently installed
applications but without desktop file it's no longer possible. See for
exempla this issue:
https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-control-center/issues/270 (someone
pays 100$ for this just because we've drop the desktop file)

IMO, we should provide a desktop file to Orca. On Windows, both Jaws,
NVDA and the narrator are discoverable by the start menu. I see no
reason that make the end-user more happy without desktop file than he is
with.

I can figure out what commit drop desktop file and tell you if you want.

Best regards,
Alex.
