Hi Tim,
I guess that it is similar with Ubuntu 18.04. If so go to
Settings > Detail > User account.
Find the button for Unlock where you will ask for your password.
Tab to the option for auto login and press Enter.
Success.

Thanks! I'll post back and report my findings or
issues, I did have one other login related question, I'm not
sure if this is using gdm, or lightdm as its display manager,
but I'm wondering how to enable auto log-in. I do see
Administration under the settings control center section, but I
don't see anything about users and groups, or login settings, or
anything. I did however install yesterday the mate desktop
environment extras package as well. So I'm assuming if it is, I
have to go under and comment out in the configuration file to
enable auto log-in.
Hi,
I use Ubuntu and the following did it for me:
Open startup applications
Tab to and press the Add button
you can type a name for this action
Tab to type or paste the command:
/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login"
--description="GNOME Login"
Tab to the Add button, press Enter
Tab to the Close button and press Enter.
Success.

Hello all, so I haven't Debian on this
machine, I'm assuming it's the same if not very similar,
with Ubuntu, because when I Google mate / Debian adding
a login sound, most all of the information that comes
up, is either cinnamon, or Ubuntu, nothing really to do
with Debian. And there is no checkbox or anything under
startup applications, to add a login sound. So I'm
wondering, how would I go about it exactly. There is no
desktop login / log out ogg files under / USR / share
slash sounds / mate.
