Re: [orca-list] TTS choices? Don't worry, not Voxin

The documentation for using a TTS other than espeak is really scanty. I spent Friday night trying to get mbrola working on my machine at home. Not only did I never get it to work, I never got it back the way it was before. I ended up re-installing linux.

Two things that really puzzled me:

#1 The relationship between orca and the speech-dispatcher config file, /etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf. It appears that a lot of stuff is commented out in that file that orca still uses.

#2 Where orca keeps it's settings. I probably should have backed up ~/.local/share/orca/user-settings.conf before messing with it. When I lost speech, I couldn't restore from a backup and I couldn't figure out how to edit it to get orca to work again. But that's par for the course, I wouldn't expect to manually fix a settings file. The weird thing was that when I deleted that file, and then went in and re-created my settings in orca preferences, it didn't re-create that file. What I ended up doing was to ssh to another machine where orca was still working and copying it back. From then on, judging by the modification time stamp on the file, modifications via orca preferences changed that file. So apparently, if you delete the user-settings.conf file, orca does something else with your preferences.

All these work with Orca + Speech Dispatcher. There are others that I
didn't try, that can be used with Speech Dispatcher and, I assume, Orca.

How do you make Pico working on Speech Dispatcher and Orca from the GUI? Last time I've checked selecting pico result in non-speech on Orca so it is really dangerous if you rely only on speech synthesis.

Best regards,
Alex.
