I'm guessing you're using the latest 5.2.6
release of VirtualBox and possibly Windows 10 as your host? If
so, there are known problems with distorted audio that seemed to
show up after the Fall Creators Update. See any of the
following (and probably more) and increasing resources probably
won't help:
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/17213?cversion=0&cnum_hist=5
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/15925
https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=85695
I have had the same problem with my Fedora
guest and was able to fix it by updating to the 5.2.7 test build
which you can find here:
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds
Hope that helps. Good luck!

Hi
James,
As others have pointed out, you may need to increase VM resources
(CPU cores or RAM).
Also, from my experience, using Intel HD Audio as your VM Audio
Controller may result in better performance.

Hi everyone
I am running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS in a VM at the moment, and am
finding that Espeak frequently becomes distorted while speaking.
A great deal of static builds up behind the voice and then
disappears again. This only happens in the VM, not with Espeak
under NVDA. I am beginning to wonder if it is related to the
third party tools the installer suggested I install when I
initially installed tthe OS?
Thank you for any advice/help. I really want to become familiar
with Linux and this list is invaluable.
My best wishes
James
