Not fixed in Orca 3.22.2 on Ubuntu 16.04 with latest Firefox on
the said distro.
Happy hacking.

Well, I stand by what I said. I'm running Orca 3.18.2 right
now, and it doesn't work. I've run more recent versions where it
was fixed, and you can check the archives to see when the fix
was announced. Of course, this doesn't mean that a regression
hasn't been introduced that broke this functionality again.
Instead of all of the drama, you could pat yourself on the back
for reporting a problem that needs to be investigated, and once
fixed, will make Orca better for everyone.

Yup, precisely. And people on this list keep telling me that
in the last few Orca versions, this bug has been fixed, that
when hitting that shift+down arrow, it should have spoken, and
said it was working. One person even using Debian stretch like
you told me that it worked for them. Can't recall who it was,
but anyway. It was the same person who firstly told me that
this issue was not happening any longer.
So, yeah, I'd love to know what the hell they're doing
differently than any of us, as obviously, you, too, reproduced
the same behavior. So, guys, I'm not doubting you all that
clame it works, do know that, but which is it? Does it, or
does it not work? And if it does work, then why for us won't
it? This just doesn't make sense. I'm getting complete mixed
answers here.

Hi,
Chris.
I've just tried to test what I understand to be your problem.
I think I'm getting the same result you are, but tell me if
I'm on or off track.
I'm using Firefox 52.6.0 and Orca 3.26.13 on Debian Stretch.
I went to www.debian.org.
I then used the h key to get to the heading where the
description of Debian begins. I pressed control plus
down-arrow to select that line, than did it several more
times. Orca did not tell me that the text was selected. I
then used control-c, and it did tell me that the selected text
was copied. (I forget the exact wording.)
I then opened gedit and pasted the text into an empty
document. The text was there, although arranged a bit
differently than on the Web page.
Is this what you're talking about?

OK, I got Orca updated. I'm now on
3.27.4 Pre.
Unfortunately, this didn't fix the issue with me not being
able to select text within firefox, and Orca verbally
telling me as I do so.
It's not really that I'm not willing to just get over it
young, it's not gonna work. It's more I'm concerned, and
admittedly stumped why so many of you clame that it works,
and does indeed speak while selecting text, yet for me, it's
not doing so. If you all are getting a feature to work that
I cannot get working, that concerns me. Mainly because, if
this is broken for me, who's to say something else isn't as
well. I'm hoping Joni or someone else may chime in here
eventually.
Matthew Dyre did call me, and we discussed my settings, and
configuration a bit. Even he! agrees with me that there is
absolutely no reason really why this shouldn't be working.
OK, given I'm on a daily build of 18.04, I can kind of see
why this would be having issues. I mean, it's a beta. What
do you expect? Things can be buggy, come on! But, here's the
thing. I've tried this as well on Ubuntu 16.04, 17.04, and
17.10. I've tried both with Voxin, and with ESpeak, so it's
not a TTS issue either, which, I never thought it was to
start with. All those environments were running Orca 3.26,
which I updated to 3.27.4 Pre. In both cases, they are not
working with Firefox 57, nor with the 52 E S R build.
I'm totally clueless.
I'd love to know if anyone has any idea what on earth is
causing this to not work.
I could get you all an Orca debug so you could see what's
going on, but I can't remember how to do that, nor where the
file is then maintained on the system.
Chris.
