Re: [orca-list] Trying to get some Orca localizations updated

Hello Kyle,

To update all po files the process is this one in the orca repository:
1) Execute the script configure
./configure

2) Go into the po directory

3) Execute the update-po command from the make file
make update-po

To edit the po file I'm using the emacs po extension of gettext. https://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/html_node/PO-Mode.html

To obtain more information I advise you to contact GNOME Translation team.

Best regards,
Alex.

I'm currently working on the F123 team to try to create and update some .po translation files for various packages, including Orca. One of the focuses of this localization and translation effort is Arabic. I must admit here that I know less about the way GNU gettext works than I would like, but I have the basics pretty much down, at least for initially generating a .pot file from sources and .po files from the .pot file to create new language translations, and have done this quite successfully for some much smaller projects and scripts.

My task for this project is to make a .po file ready for translation and send it to be translated. In this specific case, I need the ar.po file from Orca, and I need to send it for the translation to be updated. I have the 3.28 release of Orca checked out, and I do see that we have an ar.po file. The problem is that it shows a POT-Creation-Date in 2012, but a PO-Revision-Date in 2010, two years earlier. The file I have is not even new enough to translate "Screen reader on" and "Screen reader preferences," as it still has source strings for "Welcome to Orca" and "Orca preferences." The thing is that I want to recycle as much prior work as possible to make it easier for our Arabic translator, since I can see 5 prior translators, and it's always better not to redo what has already been done if possible. Can anyone tell me what I can do to update the source strings, but keep the older strings that still work without destroying the whole file and starting from scratch? Thanks very much for any help.

~Kyle
