Grub has never beeped for me on the three or so machines I'd installed
Ubuntu on to dual boot with Windows. I think the hardware needs to
support this, but I'm not sure. Maybe someone else can clarify this.
I assume on Ubuntu 18.04, you're running Gnome, which is my preferred
desktop. I'm running Gnome 16.04, but I assume the following will work
the same.
To get to your dash, which will list your favorite and currently running
applications, hit the Super key and then control+alt+tab.
To get to all of the applications you have on your system, hit the Super
key and then hit control+alt+tab three times.
To get to the folders on your system, go to the dash, tab once to Files
and then press enter to bring up the file manager.
You can enable the desktop, and I've done it on my system, but I don't
recall how. I might have used the Gnome Tweak tool or a command line
command. I'm sure you could find this with a web search, but maybe
someone else will chime in. I generally just go to the desktop to get to
the external storage I've plugged into my system, although you can do
this with the file manager, so I don't think I've ever added an
application to my desktop. I'm sure you can do this though, so maybe
another web search will help.
You might also want to check out your top bar by hitting control+alt+tab
and then using the arrow keys, especially the right and down arrow keys.
I know you're up for using beta software, and I've got no problems with
people using Ubuntu 18.04, but if you're doing this to learn Linux, you
might want to start off with something more stable so you're not running
into beta issues while you're learning a new system. Of course, the
choice is yours.

hi all.
first of all i would like to inform all that this will be a long email
and i will do my best to format it in a readable way.
so i installed ubuntu 18.4lts beta 2 yes, some of you will say
installing beta software will have problems and i know that.
i am a windows 10 insider so i was up for the chalange for ubuntu also.
so i installed it besides windows.
my first problem is that some time back some1 told me if i install it
in dualboot grub beeps when the system displays the select os screen
but for me it doesnt do that.
problem number 2. i have made windows the default os using grub
custemiser app in ubuntu, so somehow after booting into ubuntu if i
press alt f1 orca just says window, pressing up and down arrow doesnt
do anything.
pressing the windows key orca says window and again arrow keys dont
read anything.
so how do i see my installed apps and files and folders on ubuntu 18.4lts.
also can i bring app shortcuts to the desktop? how
which would be the best desktop for starters and how to change to that.
