So, here's the situation in a
nutshell.
The short story is, I'm finding the Unity search
screen when hitting the super key in Ubuntu 16.04 to be very very
confusing.
I know I can type in something to the search box I
land in by default, but let's say I don't know completely what is already
installed on my system, nor exactly what the package I'm looking for is
called.
I'm finding that trying to navigate that screen to
browse through the list/grid tiles of all my installed apps is working horribly.
It could just be me however not knowing what I'm doing. Do realize that I have
come from a Gnome 2 background and therefore am much more familiar with the old
alt+F1 method. I won't bore you with making this longwinded, but suffice it to
say, Orca has some really bizarre issues with gnome. One being my capslock key
randomly getting engaged.
Anyway, so, all this said above, I decided to try
Mate.
I'm loving it so far, but I'm told that I should be
able to hit alt+CTRL+tab to move to the top panel, where I'll find things like
my battery indicator, my network icon for things like wifi, etc. I don't see
that at all though! I can't even get to the bottom panel with running apps, my
trash, etc. either. This is just totally wicked strange!
I can only assume two possibilities, though I'm not
sure. Either 1, could things be botched due to the fact I installed Mate after
first installing Ubuntu16.04 from the official ISO image? Secondly, could it be
that after I did! install Mate, I didn't do:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
I'm a bit hesitant to do
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
As I'm fearful that may remove certain dependencies
which could potentially break things.
My main concern is, seeing I can't get to my
network panel, if I ever go somewhere aside my home and need to get on a wifi
network, I don't have a way now to do so that I know of through
Mate.
Now, I did! see
I think it is? If that doesn't work, then
try:
Actually, I think it's the 2nd of those. I'm not
where I can look at the moment.
Anyway, I'm wondering if it might be better to use
that official Mate image rather than trying to install regular Ubuntu, then
installing Mate on top of it.
Any thoughts?
Chris.
