[orca-list] speech problem after dist-upgrade debian

Hello,

I have just upgraded from debian jessie to stretch using dist-upgrade.

I now have a problem with odd speech inflection in orca.
For example, reading the menu system in mate desktop orca announces:-
Accessories menu but the accessories are very high pitch and menu is at 
the normal pitch.
This is the same throughout the system.
Is this by design and how can I get back to the previous behaviour?

Using mate desktop and espeak ng.
