I'm using gnome, but I wonder if that could be at least one of my
problems. (I now have speakup talking but not orca.) If so, might there
be something I could fix from the console? Thanks!

I have. I fixed it now, by downloading an orca.desktop file from another
machine, I have access to and it appears to work.
