Re: [orca-list] I wound up rewriting Mouse Review

Hey again.

Sorry to be spammy. But I just tried Ctrl+F1 in gnome-shell on the
Desktop. That now seems to pop up a list of application shortcuts which
you can read via flat review. There is no tooltip. I then switched to
MATE. On that desktop, Ctrl+F1 didn't do the shortcuts thing, but it
didn't pop up a tooltip either. But here's the most important thing:
Hovering the mouse over the icons on the Desktop in both GNOME Shell and
MATE resulted in no tooltips.

Also, the option you're referring to is not "show tooltips". Orca
doesn't cause tooltips to be shown ever. What that option is for is to
speak/present tooltips when what causes them to appear is moving the
mouse pointer over something. Since most Orca users are not using the
mouse pointer, any tooltips that pop up as a result of the mouse are
probably an accident and speaking them is probably not desired.

And, like I said, Orca is already speaking the descriptions for objects
(including icons on the Desktop). So I think Orca is doing all it can
and should be doing in this particular case.

Hey Kendell.

If the toolkit being used is Gtk+, then the tooltips are normally
exposed as the description and Orca should already be presenting the
description unless there is duplication or serious chattiness problems.

If the tooltip is shown by pressing Ctrl+F1, Orca should also
automatically speak it when it appears. If neither of these things are
happening, then I need more details.

hi

I haven't noticed much of a difference when testing the new mouse review
functionality but I did notice something I've been wondering about.
Would it be possible to enable the "show tooltips" option to announce
when orca's arrowing around, not just when using the mouse? The tooltips
attached to desktop icons are usually helpful and describe what the
icons do, so could help new users.

Thanks

Hey all.

I don't know if any of you use Mouse Review (which is not the same as
Flat Review). But if you do use it, please check for regressions as I
unexpectedly rewrote it. (Unexpectedly because I innocently started out
writing some methods to be shared between Flat Review, which I am
deliberately rewriting, and Mouse Review. In the process, I found so, so
many things broken in Mouse Review that I largely torched it and started
over.)

I'm going back to Flat Review now. <tired smile> Thanks!
