Re: [orca-list] New Linux user, needing higher quality speech...

Hi Josh,

Reason being is that Dectalk for Linux no longer works correctly on
modern builds of Linux. I am one of those who purchased Dectalk back
in the day, used it pretty faithfully for a few years, and have been
trying unsuccessfully to get it to run on modern builds of Linux with
little to no luck.

The problem is that it was compiled against a lot of older libraries.
It requires an enormous amount of older libs to be installed to get it
to work, and even then it is likely to crash or behave erratically. So
while Dectalk was my favorite synthesizer by far I find until someone
updates it for a modern version of Linux it is unlikely to be a real
option these days.

Do remember in the software world 8 to 10 years is an eternity.
Software and libraries changes so much in that time that unless
software is continuously upgraded it can quickly and easily become out
of date and inoperable.
