 I've noticed this in various parts of gnome. It seems to happen most
when the system is under heavy load, or gnome starts to choke, which
it will do sometimes for seemingly no reason. Orca's issues with
thunderbird are very well known and joanie is still trying to sort
them all out. This is firmly mozilla's fault for not taking
accessibility seriously enough to stay on top of the bugs. The same
thing happens to a lesser degree on windows, I'm told.
 If you want to help orca fix  these issues, the next time orca slows
down, restart orca in debug mode by executing orca --replace --debug
in the run dialog. THen once orca catches up to itself quit or kill
orca, and either attach the debug log to your next email or paste it
to a paste sight and provide the url. A program like wgetpaste or
pastebin will do it. There will be a debug file in your home directory
with the format debug-mm-dd-yy.out.
