Ah! I didn't realize I had to restart Orca on the installer so my son
oversaw that process to get everything installed. The 32-bit flavor is
working well on my old laptop. I don't see any way to get wifi going via the
gui.

Wow, that was fast!
I booted up the live medium from a USB stick, and heard some bongos,
indicating the system's readiness. I did 'alt+super+s', and got speech on
the screen on which one chooses weather to install or try Ubuntu. After I
hit 'try', I waited a bit, and got no speech. Also, the shortcut for
toggling speech is not bound. No problem, I just started orca from the
'run' dialogue. That done, I played with the systems a bit, then ran the
installer. I had to restart orca, twice, to keep speech going throughout
the installer process. When I finished, I restarted the system. On
restart, I used 'f4' to get the login manager talking; it talked; I entered
my password; and it crashed, stopping the login process. I opened another
console, logged in, and did:
sudo reboot now
This time, the login screen came up talking, I entered my password, and all
was well. After I heard the login music, I got some kind of terminal
emulator thing called Tilde running, which I stopped, and found a new
desktop running. Now, I have a new system, and the customization begins.
