[orca-list] thoughts on keyboard grab

hi all
I just got a new keyboard a few days ago, and I thought I'd express my
thoughts on keyboard grab. THis affects boxes, virtualbox, vmware, any
virtualization software you might use, but it also affects orca. I'm
going to specifically adress orca's learn mode here, because this is
the feature I'm hoping to get improved if possible. There seems to be
a problem that orca cannot solve, in that when you press a special
keyboard key not part of the normal keyboard set, EG audio play, audio
next, the settings daemon of whichever desktop you're using intercepts
this key and often causes orca to get out of learning mode, often
saying desktop frame. Icon view layored pane, instead of announcing
audio play, next, etc. I'll note that if the key you're pressing is
not set to anything, or if an application is not listening for that
keypress, then orca will announce the key. Is this at all possible to
fix? I personally, and this is just me, think orca should intercept
any and all keypresses when in learn mode, so you can explore your
keyboard, orca's key commands, etc. This might not be possible, I'mm
not sure. I just know that this would be extremely useful if you're
like me and go through keyboards like they're going out of style. Each
keyboard often has a different number of special keys, and if gnome,
mate, etc intercepts them before orca can see them you have to
basically depend on trial and error to determine what these keys do.
This is *not* a complaint whatsoever, just some thoughts. I've been
trying to look into the x server to see how orca could possibly
intercept keypresses when in learn mode but I haven't found anything
so far. Thoughts anyone?
Thanks
Kendell clark
