Re: [orca-list] Discoverability of keyboard ungrab in VM software?

Hello,
I think Joanie is trying to get us to think on how to conwey the fact keyboard will be handled by the guest machine and how to get its control back to the host machine. I would say trying to do something similar like virtual box does displaying a dialogbox saying this fact plus a checkbox where we can opt not to display this again or even issuing tray notification would be great I think.

Greetings

Peter

hi
I'd add that there are a few accessibility issues in boxes itself that
need addressing. The menu bar will speak with orca before a vm is
loaded, but afterwards simply displays push button. SOmetimes you have
to flat review and click with the mouse to get into the new vm wizard.
After this of course orca works fine. This is not an issue of
accessibility, but boxes does not seem to enable sound in your virtual
machines and there appears no way to do so. The settings panel for
changing vm properties is nearly unusable with orca. I can provide a
debug log if needed. This is *not* a complaint, just trying to make
boxes better. Having used gnome shell as my desktop environment of
choice for the past month, I'm really impressed. Relating to keyboard
grab, I've noticed a fairly serious issue with a gnome extension known
as "steal my focus" It does what it sounds like. Instead of allowing
gnome to pop up a notification stating "notification NameOfWindow is
ready" It simply pops up taht window, forcing focus to it. This works
fine. Until you restart gnome. If you happen to have a gnome keyring
password prompt at login, as I do, steal my focus somehow, I'm not at
all sure how, prevents the focus from getting into that password box
and gnome will not allow any key presses to be acted upon other than
typing in the password to unlock the system. This is rambling and off
topic, sorry. I was intending to stay on topic but I thought about the
gnome focus issue and thought I'd post it while I was thinking about it
Thanks

Hey all.

The developer of Boxes (GNOME's VM client) asked me about providing
a hint to users about how to ungrab the keyboard. In particular, if
you're in Boxes and want keyboard events to be sent to the host
rather than the VM, you can either move the mouse or you can press
and release Ctrl+Alt.

My response to him was that this is the same issue as in other VMs
and that documentation is a good idea. But of course one could
potentially get trapped in a VM having not yet read the
documentation.

So what say you? How should Boxes handle this situation? What
accessibility issues related to keyboard grab/ungrab and
discoverability have you encountered in similar products that Boxes
should avoid or do a better job at?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts! --joanie
