[orca-list] a strange issue with orca's selection of items

hi all.
The subject may not make much sense, but I'm going to try to be as
clear as I can. IN gnome as well as mate, there seems to be something
very strange going on with orca's counting of icons on the desktop and
in the file manager. When I first start up orca, it focuses on the
desktop just like it's supposed to. I have a little vision, so can see
the visual layout of my desktop. There's a computer icon as the first
icon, followed by kendell's home, followed by downloads, daisy-books,
etc. Visually the count should start with computer as the first icon,
kendell's home as the second, so on. However, when I use orca's where
am I to ask where I am, orca says, icon panel. Computer. 1 of 16 items
selected on 10 of 16. If I down arrow, I get to, kendell's home. 1 of
16 items selected on 8 of 16. If I down arrow some more, the selection
number jumps. It can jump from 8, to 4, to 6, to 2 ... etc. It's all
over the map. The desktop icons are all neatly lined up, so it's not
where they are on the screen. There is a fix for this, but I"m not
sure how this fixes it. If I press control+f10 to open the menu,
select keep aligned, and uncheck it, followed by organize desktop by
name, then restart orca, computer will be the first icon, followed by
kendell's home, etc just as they are visually layed out. I'm stumped.
THis only seems to temporarily fix the issue until I restart orca or
the computer, then the count is inaccurate again. Does anyone know
what could cause this? Is it an at-spi issue or the desktop, or orca?
I'm stumped.
There's one additional note I have. In mate, orca reports all desktop
icons and icons in caja, the file manager as 'not selected' but orca's
where am I can still figure out how many items there are. Gnome
doesn't have this problem, so it must be mate specific.
