Re: [orca-list] XP-Like Ubuntu security question

I'm using various Linux versions, including Ubuntu 10.04. Although
it's currently supported for servers (it receives security updates, so
the security shouldn't be a problem), the main problem is you can't
(or it's much harder) install new software, e.g. a roughly newer
versions of Transmission, Libreoffice, pidgin, wine and others; in
most cases, you'll need to compile the software yourself.

On the other hand, if you use unsupported versions like Ubuntu
8.*/10.10, you'll be exposed to new vulnerabilities, e.g. Heartbleed;
so yes, security could actually be something to consider.

Dear,
It will always depend on The fact, if You will use Linux operating
system in The server environment or if You only experimenting with it on
YOurs personal computer.
Professional companyes, who own servers are using also commercial
expensive software for Linux and also hardware firewalls.
It is true, that many updates are made to make Linux as secure as it
could be.
The server administrators, who are working for big ISP companyes such as
O2 or other could give You more detailed info, but they are very often
not allowed to provide such information.
They are using terminals which are being connected to The servers.
May be, that some of ISP, Internet service providers are using
commercial version of Rethad Linux, but it is only my speculation.
Try to imagine Linux distribution, which will contain latest security
features, latest even very expensive software and YOu will remove all
external commands executable from Basch shell.
If You would only have modules which Would allow You to switch between
virtual consoles and see The Linux kernel messages.
Virus would not have so many chances to attack, because many binary
modules executable from basch shell such as killall would be removed.
It is may be my nonsense but this system would be secure.
Only specified application would work with him, so no desktop
environment, only application, which You would need for transferring
data between clients of Yours ISP connections.
