I've run into this issue also, and have sent a couple of mails about
it. I haven't gotten a response so far. Not sure if this is a mate
issue or an orca/at-spi issue. Try gksu pluma instead. You'll need to
enter the root password, or make one if there isn't one, and you
should be able to accessibly modify files as suparuser.
