Ubuntu 13.10 and Ubuntu 14.04. With Debian Wheezy, I've noticed it works some of the time. Having said
that, I must stress that my Debian set up is atypical because I basically hand-picked all the packages
starting from a barebones cli. So, I may just have not installed the component that breaks accessing
applications as root in Orca. The biggest difference in my Debian installation and a common one is that I do
not have Pulse Audio on there at all. I do on my Ubuntu box and that's where I run into issues with root
applications and applications run as root or sudo. So, it may be a Pulse Audio thing and not an Orca thing
now that I think about it a little more.

Is this just with Debian? I have not had issues so far losing speech running gedit with either gksu or sudo
that I recall in the desktops I mostly use. Perhaps I've not yet tested this in gnome 3.x as I've just
started experimenting with 3.10 very recently. I have set up keyboard shortcuts to open gedit as root on at
least one desktop, unity or xfce most likely; so I know there was no issue there. I just ran sudo gedit /path
to some file/file with no delay or silence here using XFCE and a fairly recent orca build from master. I
think but am not 100% sure I've also edited files as root whe using mate, think that was on Vinux4.90.

I use Vim with Speakup in a console. That is truly the very best way to use CLI applications. I have had
similar issues with using applications inside of gnome-terminal with Orca. If there is an editor that I
want to use while in a Gnome session, it is either Gedit or Nano. Mostly, when I am using an editor in
the terminal it is to edit some config file or other as root because, for some reason, Orca stops speaking
if I run Gedit with gksu or sudo to open a file as root.
Thanks.

Hi,
well I vanted to use Vim from the command line, but orca behaves veirdly with it.
Maybe it can be fixed.
I open Vim from Gnome terminal and press A to append text.
I can write fine.
But when I try to read text by pressing up and down arrows, it behaves inconsistently. sometimes it reads a
line without problems, sometimes it reads just "Empty", sometimes it reads "empty" and the line...
How do you use it?
Were you able to get Emacs to work? I like gedit, so far, but I would like to use some of those editors
because there are loads of nice plugins for them.
Thanks,
Vojta

Plain old Vim works well. Just access it as a CLi application and not a GUI one. Iv you don't like Vim,
you can use another VI port like Elvis or something. Eitehr way, it's very useful to learn as it is
ubiquitous.

I think aviword draws the text using some kind of bitmap as it were instead of using normal text, or at
least that is what I was told a few years ago. I have no idea about gvim, but have not heard of it being
accessible. I have always stuck with using traditionally cli editors in VTs, and gedit, mouse-pad or
bluefish when working in a graphical invironment, although I must confess I've started nano by reflex
quite a few times when in a terminal emulator.

I have never been able to use Gvim with gtk interface. The menus

I do not know why. Similar behavior can be observed in
applications like Abiword and Gnumeric.

Hi,
I wanted to start with Vim, however if I want to use it in Gnome
terminal, it is not very pleasant, because Orca is reading "empty line"
before every line.
I tried to install Gvim - Vim with GTK interface, but this doesn't
read lines at all.
Can I help you somehow to debug this? It should use normal GTK
interface so I don't know, why there exists a problem.
Thanks,
Vojta
