Well, at least with the jessie version of gnome-terminal, you can make 
it act like it did in debian wheezy by configuring it to do so in the 
preferences. There is a checkbox titled "Enable neumonics" which has to 
be checked. It's funny that that would be off by default. That seems 
wrong to me.
