I've gotten speakup to hush. The issue is in Orca. The Network
management tool is where I realized the key wouldn't work. It would
read something like the instructions on how to input the SSID and
security settings of a WiFi network. That's the SSID box. But when I
tab over, it is still reading the contents of the instructions.
Pressing control wouldn't shut it up. Pressing tab took me to help,
shift-tab reread the entire instruction box again, and control still
didn't shut it up.

In which instance(s) does the control key not work? If you're referring
to speakup, I think 'speakup+enter' is the shut-him-up key. In orca,
the control key should interrupt speech. Any key press, for that
matter, should do this.
