This sounds like Speakup is starting to read the contents of the console
to you. Do you have Speakup installed and working on this system? This
is how Vinux 3.2 used to behave. It's true that the control key didn't
stop speech, but you could log on and start using the desktop before
Speakup finished speaking. It was just a bit difficult to listen to Orca
over Speakup.
