Re: [orca-list] New user!

Forgot to mention, the graphical version of Vim called Gvim has never worked
with Orca beyond menus and dialogs. The text editing area, (the most
important part imho) uses some sort of widget that doesn't talk to at-spi
properly from what I can gather. The same phenomenon can be observed with
Abiword and pretty much anything using the Scintilla widget which a lot of
wxgtk apps like Geanny, Codelite and Code::Blocks use. I don't think Gvim
uses Scintilla though. I'd scratch it off my list of possible full time
text editors if I were you. The text-based Vim works OK as does Elvis,
another VI clone. Honestly, though, Nano should work really well for
anything you need to do in the terminal like I said. As for Gedit, the
graphical Gnome text editor I mentioned in my earlier post, the one problem
you will run into if you try to use it is if you are trying to access files
as root. Orca doesn't seem to do well in files accessed as root outside of
a terminal. I am not sure why. This was not always the case, however as I
remember being able to use it just fine in this manner before the move to
DBus when all things were using Corba. Sorry for the long post. You are a
developer though, so, I thought the technical details might be useful to you
in some way.

Alex M

Hello and welcome to the list!

I'm using Orca for development websites (I'm sighted).

As luck would have it, I asked the very same question on the VIM mailinglist
a few days ago:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/vim_dev/f1nLx3Tl-tI

The user replied on my thread is using JAWS on Windows 8, though. Maybe you
can add some more experience on the thread?

I use Speakup when I use Vim. If I'm going to use an editor in the
Terminal with Orca, it's usually Nano. This strategy has worked well
for me for a number of years now. The best editor to use with Orca,
of course, is Gedit. You can do pretty much the same things you can
do with Vim using it. It is very powerful, easy to use and available
as Gnome's stock editor.

Hi,
I am Derek Riemer and I am new to the list. I have been using linux
and orca for a few months now, and like it over all. I don't use it
full time by any means, but I use it often enough. I am curious if
there is an extention of some kind needed for vim, as the terminal
version crashes randomly and speaks weird things sometimes, and the
graffical version says nada.
Thanks,
