I was thinking of doing something, but the time got away from me. I
have a speakout and a Dec Talk, but one reason I am still interested is
that I want to get away from audio conflicts, so speakup and Orca can
work together without using Pulseaudio! I still hate that thing.

Yes indeed this could be done. Quite a while ago on the speech-dispatcher mailing list there was a
discussion about writing a generic serial synth framework for speech-dispatcher, but nothing has come of it
yet. I suspect as time goes on, hardware synths will be even less of a priority for those working on Linux
speech related projects.
