Hi Thomas!
Yeah, at times, the performance is important. I have a dual core 64
bit machine running at about 3.0 ghz, and 3 gb of ram. When I've been
recording multi track audio projects, I sometimes get audible xruns
which isn't good.
May I suggest looking at other ways of minimizing audio disruption first? There are some services that are
known to disrupt audio more than others, particularly things like network manager. Even if you are using a
light desktop, if something like network manager is running, it is still possible for it to disrupt audio
recording.
Your system has ample resources, but when it comes to Audio, a beefier desktop won't necessarily affect audio
performance, since the desktop itself is mostly idle. I think its more important to minimize the number of
background services that are currently running, particularly those that are constantly monitoring hardware
state, like network manager. It is possible to turn off undesired services in GNOME, but doing so will
possibly give you a slightly less pleasant desktop experience. Even then, these days, most services are only
ever activated when they are needed.
