Just hit control s at the login prompt.  For good measure, tell him to
launche gnome-control-center or system settings (same application) >
Universal Settings > Seeing page > screen-reader needs to be toggled off.
Close and log out of the system using the poweroff or shutdown button and
when it comes back up, his silence will be golden.
