Re: [orca-list] orca on command prompt

Well, your instructions seem to have worked on my box, where I'm now using Fedora 18. It's a better approach than I've been using to get speakup running, so thanks.

Orca does work in the terminal. As for getting speech in the console, I
don't know what Linux distribution you are running so, this will be generic:

1. Make sure your linux kernel is at least as recent as 2.6.38.
2. Make sure you have E-speak installed as a synthesizer.
3. Install the Espeakup package either from your distribution's package
management system or from wherever you can obtain the sources.
4. In a terminal which Orca can read, btw, issue the following commands as
root:

modprobe speakup_soft start=1
espeakup

You should now have speech in your console in most cases. Good luck.

You can use Orca in the terminal, which may solve some of your command line
needs.

What distribution are you trying to get Speakup working in the console?
BTW, this question is probably better asked on a general Linux list as
opposed to the Orca list.

Hi i do understand taht orca will not read anything on the command
prompt windows and was hoping that someone could give me a hand on
more info on speakup. I do have speakup installed but just not sure
how to get it running when on the command window. Thanks much
