Hey Dan,
You will have to press alt f2 then type compiz --replace this will use compiz as the windowmanager and you can then use it. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Update with my testing. I ran the system monitor and my system didn't
crash and I could see everything in it no problem. I think the power
icon is an indecator that isn't installed. I would check that and see if
there is a power indecator.
