Hello,
I must say I was also one of those suffering from this in the past.
Actually I was so bothered that I have refused to use linux full-time in
the past. Now I am using Arch linux with Gnome 3.6.2 and Thunderbird 18
and occassionally using Ubuntu 12.04 with Thunderbird 17 and I can
perfectly browse the imap folder with over 40000 messages inside.
Also I can use search messages feature or filter the list.
Sometimes Thunderbird may be starting up a little longer than other apps
but I think with such a strange setup it is expected.
Greetings
Peter

But in the recent past,I had experience of orca getting slow when update

Probably due to Orca being flooded with events from Thunderbird. That
has since been prevented from happening by a change to ATK, if memory
serves me.
