Hello, Hank.
I am going to forward your e-mail and my response to the Orca List
in case anyone else is curious about this. I hope that this is okay.
The main page for Knoppix can be found at http://knoppix.net/.
The Knoppix Download page is here: http://knoppix.net/get.php. You
are given three options:
1. Download Knoppix via Bittorrent:
http://torrent.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/
2. Download Knoppix via a list of FTP Mirrors:
http://knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html
3. Buy a copy. I will not list the links for this option as I do not
believe that you can purchase CDs, DVDs, and USB keys containing
ADRIANE Knoppix, but rather just a regular Knoppix installation.
On either of the download pages (whether you use the Bittorrent link
or the FTP mirrors), you want to be sure to get the latest version
of ADRIANE Knoppix, not just plain Knoppix. Keep in mind that, right
now, the latest version of Knoppix is at 6.7.1, and it uses an older
version of Orca (unless I am mistaken). From my reading, however,
Knoppix 7.0 should be out eventually.
Here is a little bit about aDRIANE Knoppix for your reading:
Adriane Knoppix is a variation that is intended for blind
and visually impaired people, which can
be used entirely without vision oriented output devices. It was
released in the third quarter of 2007 as a Live CD. Adriane
Knoppix is named after Adriane Knopper, the wife of Klaus
Knopper, the developer of Knoppix. Adriane has a visual impairment,
and has been assisting Klaus with the development of the software.[12]
The name Adriane is also a backronym
for "Audio Desktop Reference Implementation And Networking
Environment".
I hope that this is helpful.
Take care.

Hello, Simon.
I do not have really a good answer for you on this one other
than the fact that I have used a Live USB version of ADRIANE
Knoppix which uses LXDE as its GUI desktop environment, and it
has Orca installed by default for blind users. At least under
the Knoppix environment many things seem to work pretty well.
As far as getting this up and running on, say for example,
Lubuntu (the LXDE version of Ubuntu) I really have no clue how
to do it or how it would work. I was actually able to get
magnification working on an Lubuntu installation which I did for
my mother-in-law last week using the Compiz eZoom plugin and
replacing OpenBox with Compiz for window management, and it was
fairly easy. I think that LXDE would be a great alternative for
lower-end systems, especially if it could be completely
accessible with Orca.
the system on which I installed Lubuntu was probably over ten
years old. It originally ran windows XP, but them someone
installed an illegal copy of Windows 7 onto it. My mother-in-law
was tired of the spyware and the crippling effect of not running
a legitimate version of Windows 7, so I installed Lubuntu onto
the system and it worked wonderfully!
From my understanding, LXDE is *supposed* to be GTK-based...now
mind you that this is from my understanding, which quite often
can be incorrect. But as I mentioned earlier, it would be a
wonderful option for blind users who have older computer
systems.
I am sorry that I cannot be of more help. All that I can really
advise is to give ADRIANE Knoppix a try in a live environment or
in a virtual machine. It starts off talking and has text-based
menus on screen by default; you have to go through and select a
menu option for running a GUI environment.
Once again, I am sorry that I cannot be of more help to you.
