Sorry, Alex. It looks like your message just came to me. I'll forward it
(below) to the Orca List.
I hope all is well.

Hi.
If you can get someone to set it up for you, I'm rather partial to
Debian Squeeze. Installing squeeze accessibly right now is a bit of a
pain though. You have to use the Wheezy netinstall iso or the
business card one and change debconf priorities to like 4 or something
so that it gives you the choice of installing squeeze which is the
stable version. Barring a friendly neighborhood geek available to do
the honors for you, I also put my vote on Ubuntu. It's simply
maaah-vluss these days with an accessible installer and its own
desktop which is accessible as well. And, it's very user-friendly.

Wubi is actually the Windows Ubuntu Installer. It allows you to install
Ubuntu along side Windows, and Ubuntu is basically stored in a Windows
swap file. I am not too sure how accessible Wubi is to screen readers
such as JAWS or NVDA because it has been a very long time since I used
Windows. I actually use Linux exclusively here at home.
When I referred to the installer being accessible, I was meaning the
installer which you access through the Ubuntu live medium which is used
to install Ubuntu onto the hard drive either alongside windows or by
replacing Windows with Ubuntu. If you want to test out Ubuntu without
going through this channel (i.e. the installer found on the live CD or
USB flash drive), Wubi still exists and does work well from what I have
heard.
I hope that this has been of some help to you.

Thanks for the suggestions, I would try ubuntu then, and what is the
installation procedure that is accessible? I remember a program under
windows that did the installation in past times, is that still working?

I have heard a lot fo great thigns about Trisquel, and I will have to
take a look at it someday soon.
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 personally, and it works very well both as a
desktop system and in the area of accessibility also. Both Trisquel
and Ubuntu have completely accessible installers, so the installation
process should not require sighted assistance at all.
Others here on the list use Vinux (an Ubuntu-based distribution which
has many accessibility features up and running out of the box which
would require some configuring in other distributions), so you may
see some recommendation for it as well. I have heard a lot of great
things about it as well.. The best thing to do is to try to get some
live CDs or USB flash drives of these systems, try them out, and see
which one you prefer. We will be here to help along the way.
Take care.

Hello to all!
what would be the best choice for a pretty inexpert linux user to
start
with orca now?
Is ubuntu still the best choice?
thanks
