Which menu are you talking about? What desktop manager are you running?
If you're running Unity 2D then f10 in an application will take you to
it's menu, alt+f10 takes you to the system menu, alt+f1 takes you to the
launcher and alt+f2 takes you to the dash. I'd suggest checking out the
