I like a label for a checkbox which increases the top rate by 3x to
be called something appropriate, like Turbo, Boost, Sonic (the name
of the filter software), or Karen (my wife who talks very fast).
Note that currently only espeak has this software included in it's
package. Too bad it is not implemented in Speech-Dispatcher so it
would apply to all synthesizers.
In my case, I never need capitalization indicated while it is
reading, such as on a website or email. I suppose proofreaders are
the only ones who could stand this as well as having all punctuation
read. I only use it while typing and while reviewing by Word or
character. I usually set indicate capitalization using Cap on
individual characters or the first character in a word. Saying All
Caps for an acronym makes sense, but mixed case gets harder. I have
heard other screen readers say Cap before every instance of a
capital letter in a word. Normally I set capitalization indicated
by character only and review by character if capitalization is an
issue. Perhaps a combo box (drop down list) for Indicate capitals
by Char, Word, Sentence, or All is more appropriate? Again espeak
already does some of this, except they say Capital rather than Cap.
I would be happy just to have a simple way in the orca preferences
to set this feature "as is". The remainder of my rant is how it
ideally could be handled.

I
think a couple of checkboxes should do it. Let's call them
'speak' and 'pitch'. If 'pitch' is selected, present the

other attributes? This could get messy if we're not careful.

Good idea to have the "Cap" for capital
letters as an option. "CapCap"
would be good for things that are all in capitals.

On at least one release of orca or Ubuntu, I have seen the Set
PunctuationLevel bound to Orca + p. This binding made sense to
me.
I have two additional items I personally would like to see added
to the orca
preferences. The first may not be very popular anymore.
Because my hearing
sometimes misses the pitch change for capital letters, I prefer
it say "Cap"
before the letter when typing and reviewing by letter. I have
figured out
more than once how to do this for espeak.
Is it generally possible to provide a checkbox which would work
for most
synthesizers? The second enhancement I would like to see added
to the orca
preferences dialog is a way to speed up the speech rate beyond
the default.
The espeak package now uses the libsonic libraries which can
speed up the
speech up to 3x the previous range. This is utilized by NVDA in
Windows as
a Turbo checkbox. Currently in Vinux, the max - min range and
the default
rates can be changed in the configuration files.

Let me know if I'm mistaken, but one
thing I've never seen is the
option of a key binding for changing punctuation level on
the fly.
This would often be helpful.
It's unbound by default and is currently called "Cycles to the
next
speaking of punctuation level." Personally I think that could
be
better worded. Regardless, given that we are getting a
makeover, I
would ask you to consider the following: Why didn't you find
this before?
Possibilities could include, but are not limited to:
1. Lousy description of function
2. The keybindings page is confusing
3. You think the setting should be elsewhere 4. Something(s)
else
For the record, I am not going to take any offense at, or be
hurt by,
hearing a bunch of "What I hate about the Orca Preferences
dialog"
items. In fact, that is *exactly* what I am asking all of you
to
provide. I want to hand Felipe with the most detailed list
possible so
that we can, once and for all, have a GUI that is awesome.
Thanks again!
