He isn't alone in rejecting Gnome 3. See for example the recent post by Ingo Molnar:

Linux has always had a plethora of desktop environments to suit different
needs and preferences. This isn't going to change. We can expect those in the
community who are dissatisfied with Gnome 3 and KDE 4 to move elsewhere, and
XFCE is one of the beneficiaries.
