Hello,
This sounds very much like the issue reported on the run dialog in gnome.

I don't think its a general gedit bug as I have also observed similar 
issues with leafpad.

Without looking at this in detail, my initial thought is that for some 
reason orca is not receiving the focus event when applications open and 
so orca looses track of where the focus is.
