If you are using gnome 3, then follow Kyle's suggestions for
temperarily install gnome-tweak-tool and gnome-shell, then run
gnome-tweak-tool followed by uninstalling the two packages. I did all
that and it works but in order for it to work, you have to launch
nautilus each time; Joanmarie mentioned this observation and I
concur. While I was in the desktop, I did see the Trash icon.
