Hello,
I did have an issue where speakup stopped loading for me with certain
kernels. In that particular case it turned out that the quiet option for the
speakup module was broken and was causing an error when it loaded. This was
in perfectly stable releases of the kernel. I believe the issue has now been
fixed, but your distribution may still be using an affected kernel.
Some things you can try to find out what the issue is:
* Are you loading the speakup modules automatically at boot up or manually
later with the modprobe command. What happens if you try the other?
* Are there any errors given when starting speakup. dmesg may be a useful
command, the kernel log or may be even the output when using the modprobe
command.
* Is any specific speakup module causing the issue? If using modprobe try
loading speakup and then the synth specific one to rather than relying on
modprobe to just automatically load the required speakup module.
* Are you giving any options to speakup's modules? Remember you may have
options specified in configuration files in /etc/modprobe.d/ which I did
forget about when trying to find the issue with the quiet option.
* What synthesiser are you using with speakup? Is the issue specific to that
synth, is it more general or is it the only synth you can try? If it is
software synths you are using, are you using espeakup or speechd-up? Have
you definitely got sound configured correctly so it works from the terminal
and gnome, particularly an issue when pulseaudio is in use.
* Finally, I nearly forgot, is speakup built in or built as modules?
Also it may be worth asking on the speakup mailing list.
As for is Linux something you can fall into with no issues, well is any
computer system? There are certainly things with Linux I much prefer,
however recently things such as pulseaudio have really lead linux in
directions I do not like and probably have contributed to my decision of
falling away from Linux in favour of other systems.

Howdy all
Well I think I might have done something to speakup. I probably should not
have, but I ran updates anyway to see what would happen. Everything seems to
work okay, orca almost runs better, but speakup seems to have been silenced.
It does not seem to turn on. I wonder if someone could refer me to a source
to troubleshoot this problem. I have only found info on installing it, but I
don't know if that is what I want to do. I might already have an
installation of speakup, and following the online directions for installing
from nothing might just clutter up my computer even more.
I am getting the impression that linux really isn't something that you can
just casually walk in to, unless you just don't care to have a computer that
runs well. I'm going to look for some "linux for dummies" manuals -- I doubt
if they will help me with the speakup problem -- but it might be useful.
Right now when I read online instructions, I don't really understand any of
the terminology that they are using, so in the end the online documentation
is proving rather useless.
Regards
Justin
