OK, unless you haven't found it yet: You can boot into a recovery mode. Usually in GRUB it's one entry down from the normal kernel. This will let you log in with your root password. Do you have a braille display? Otherwise try a live CD or DVD. I still think Knoppix is rather good for saving systems.
