Hi, This is a known bug and there is a a workaround.
You need to create the following in your /var/lib/gdm directory.
mkdir -p .local/share/orca
You need to be root and there is a . dot before the local name.
After you need to copy your orca setup files to the new created directory.
Finally you need change own and group of the new structure directories.
chown -R gdm:gdm .local
Hope this helps.

Hi.
I am trying Ubuntu Maverick in a virtual machine before upgrading my
main system. I have noticed that the login screen no longer speaks. Is
this a known bug? If so, is there a work around? The reason I am
worried about this is because I have more then one user on my system,
and don't want to login as the wrong user.
thanks,
