There's also a neat tool called youtube-dl which downloads the content
to be played and then you just play it with the player of your
choice. I've only used it a couple times but worked for me at the
console great. It doesn't put an extension on the downloaded file so
I'm not sure what exactly format it is but it seems to be mp3 for what
I've guessed and that gues worked for me with mplayer.

Hi,
Just out of curiousity I tried the command line version. It didn't work
for me. Here's the command I used, do you know what's wrong with it?
id="NijaGeIO18Y";mplayer -fs http://youtube.com/get_video.php?video_id=
$id\&t=$(curl -s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=$id | sed -n 's/.*, "t":
"\([^"]*\)", .*/\1/p')
I think Youtube may have changed their url format slightly, it keeps
giving 404 errors and file not found.
Also, with the Totem plugin, it finds videos but when trying to play
them it gives an error about permission. I am still using Lucid though,
so that may be the problem, but I just haven't gotten around to
upgrading to Maverick yet.
Thanks
Storm.

Use Totem's youtube plugin. Works fine for me here.
Or drive it from the command line over mplayer. See:
