[orca-list] Orca and ARIA?

Hi all.

I have a web app to which I'm trying to apply some serious ARIA magic.
Currently I'm using aria-live to great effect with Orca, and have some
regions speaking and others not as application need dictates. But now
I'm starting to want more. Here's what I've tried, as per various ARIA
docs I've read:

I set role="application" on my <body/> just for giggles. As far as I can
tell, the only thing that changed was how my page title was read. I have
Firefox set to not read page content on load, and without this role I
get the first line of content spoken, but with it I get nothing.
Everything else works as normal.

Set a "menu" role on one of my menu divs. Nothing changed as far as I
can tell.

Set role="toolbar" on a div of <button/> elements I treat as a toolbar.
Again, nothing happened.

Is there some other check, other than the presence of a role attribute,
that Orca uses to determine whether a given element is an ARIA widget?
Or are these particular cases just not supported?

Thanks.
