Mike, I think this is the bug you are
looking for: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=310931
It was opened in 2005, and there are
a couple of duplicate bugs referenced in the comments.
My best guess as to why it hasn't been
implemented yet is that people want all the bells and whistles... like
they want the combo to drop down when the user starts typing characters,
and they want the list to dynamically show only the items that currently
match the typed string, etc.

Hello all,

I am attempting to file a bug against the issue I mentioned earlier about
no first letter navigation in gtk combo boxes.  I'm new to bugzilla
but have figured most of it out except for what version to file this against.
 What version are we using in the current version of ubuntu/vinux,
etc so I can file this?  I will post the url so everyone can modify
the bug if I screw something up, smiles.  Thanks,
