Fernando, you do not need change configurations in thunderbird.
Try the following:
1. Launch thunderbird.
2. Press orca_key+ctrl+space to activate the preferences for thunderbird.
3. There are eight pages, look for the page entitled shredder.
4. Press tab until you find acheck box called grab focus on objects when
navigating.
In my machine it is checked.
Experiment to change the state of the check box and let us know the result.

Thank you very much Vilmar.
On a related note: if anyone has a checklist of the modifications we
must make to Thunderbird to optimize sightless use, please let me know.
Under View I have:
Message body as: text.
I have tried original html and text, but neither seem to be giving me
access to the messages beyond the first few lines.
Actually, recently even the first few lines seem to be inacessible.
Thanks,
Fernando
