Hello Helios and list,
Control-alt-d takes the focus to the desktop, then control-f10 brings
up the desktop context menu.
Your sister may find useful this site, which describes gnome keyboard
navigation:

Hi all,
my sister wanted me to ask here how is it able un unselect selected
icon on the desktop when she wants to get the context menu containing
commands like "create new folder" etc. She can do this by clicking to
an empty area on desktop, but is it posssible to do this with
keyboard?
thanks
