2. Which distros currently have reasonably easy to use accessible installers with Orca?
That would be Ubuntu and, since it's based on Ubuntu, Vinux. Opensolaris
does as well though that's obviously not a Linux distro, and your target
hardware is more limited with Opensolaris.
3. Wich distros are recommended for use with Orca with low latency audio subsystems? I recall that some
older versions of Ubuntu had a lot of latency in TTS while using Pulse.
The Pulse issues have been fixed for a few months now. Ubuntu 10.04
(currently still in beta but very stable all the same now) has the new
speech dispatcher that will handle Pulseaudio without latency problems,
though if you want to you can tweak Ubuntu 9.10 to work this way as well
if you don't wish to try 10.04 yet.
I truely bbelieve that open source is the way to go, but I sadly can't use a system that is sluggish or
buggy. I don't need to be persuaded on the open source aspect, I am looking for a easy to install and use
distro wit Orca (hopefully with stable and frequent updates, so that I can evangelize for Orca and open
source OSs, as I have for Drupal as a very accessible CMS.
I don't find Orca sluggish anymore and I haven't had a crash in some
time now. Obviously nothing is ever completely bug-free however, and
there's still occasionally a bit of lag while web browsing although
nothing like OS X still has sometimes. Honestly, I'm amazed at the
rather explosive progress we've seen in all areas recently. I'm also
coming from OS X, and I don't find much that I miss from there. I
haven't used Windows for anything other than screen reader testing for
some time now, since after OS X and Linux it just seems awkward.
