Re: [orca-list] Orca and *nix distros

I'll shamelessly plug Vinux, though I know there is much work done in
other distros. Open Solaris, in particular, benefits from the long
efforts of Sun's old accessibility effort, and Joanie, the Orca lead,
develops in Open Solaris. While I haven't tried it, I see good
comments about Arch Linux. For blind beginners, I think Knoppix
Adriane is clearly the best. But for blind power-users who prefer a
popular variation of Linux, I'll recommend Vinux. The upcoming 3.0
release is based on Ubuntu Lucid, and advances we make in Vinux have a
good chance to feed into Ubuntu.

As for usability, they all have warts, but I've seen significant
progress over the last year. Joanie and friends at Orca have done an
incredible job. Luke at Ubuntu has been on the ball as well. Then
there's a bunch of guys like, like Tony Sales, Storm Dragon, Atilla
Hammer, Chris Brannon, Mike Coulombe, Janusz Chmiel, and so many
others who are contributing. We may not quite have what you're
looking for, but there's a lot of momentum, and more work to do than
we can handle. I think we'll get there, but we're not quite there
yet.

Good evening,
It has been a while since I tinkered with *nix and Orca.  I'm strongly
considering swapping my current OS X / Windows (VM) configuration to a
completely open source setup.
Some questions:
1. What is the target distro (most popular?) that Orca is being developed
against?
2. Which distros currently have reasonably easy to use accessible installers
with Orca?
3. Wich distros are recommended for use with Orca with low latency audio
subsystems? I recall that some older versions of Ubuntu had a lot of latency
in TTS while using Pulse.
I truely bbelieve that open source is the way to go, but I sadly can't use a
system that is sluggish or buggy.  I don't need to be persuaded on the open
source aspect, I am looking for a easy to install and use distro wit Orca
(hopefully with stable and frequent updates, so that I can evangelize for
Orca and open source OSs, as I have for Drupal as a very accessible CMS.
