In my experience, you don't even need to do that. Just escape out of the
menu you pulled up then pull up a context menu (applications key or
shift+f10) and escape out of that. For reasons as yet unknown to me,
doing this will actually unstick your focus from the panel. Since it's
the panel, everything is guaranteed to have a context menu. I've also
been able to produce this with *every* menu pulled down from the GNOME
panel. Even the main menu, if you tab to it from the top panel and open
it with the arrow keys, will cause you to be stuck in the panel.

the physical mouse or touch pad, so I haven't tested the work around
with the flat review mouse click.
